Portugese police investigating the disappearance of Madeleine McCann are refocusing their attention on original suspect, dubious expat Brit loner, Robert Murat, 33.
Mother's boy Murat, 33, first had his collar felt as early as 10 days after Maddie went missing from the Praia da Luz apartment.
Lone wolf bachelor Murat, 33, who is still very close to his mother, was suspected very early in the case, as the whole of Britain grieved over little Maddie's fate, but he slunk back into obscurity when Maddie's absentee parents, Kate and Gerry, were themselves controversially named as suspects and exposed as self-centred yuppies in the popular tabloids.
But now the new Portugese policeman in charge of the Maddie mystery wants a complete overhaul of the script, it was claimed yesterday by a Praia da Luz ice-cream vendor, and this is bound to be bad news for ageing singleton Murat, 33, according to sources close to this newspaper. Shifty Murat, 33, who is unmarried, is set to be dragged back out of the shadows to face the music again.
Meanwhile, writes Nichola Machiavelli, a babysitter has told people she saw a man moving behind trees outside the apartment where Maddy was lost.
The unnamed woman was looking after 4-year old triplets belonging to a Brain Surgeon and his Novelist wife in an Ocean Club apartment 2 years before the McCanns stayed there.
Spanish newspaper El Bandito said the childminder was looking after the triplets while their parents enjoyed a meal with Portugese friends when she saw what she thought was a crow in the trees. This turned out to be a man's hair. She shouted and a man emerged from the shadows and ran away. She said nothing for 2 years, but reported the incident at the time guilty-looking Mummy's Boy Robert Murat, 33, was hauled in for questioning after Ian Huntley-like public gestures of helpfulness to the police, according to the Spanish newspaper.
Meanwhile, writes Angela Stalin, it looks like the McCanns are not happy with the way Maddy's loss is being probed. A source close to the McCanns said 'Kate and Gerry are very upset. It is a disgrace that the chances of capturing Maddie's kidnapper may have been affected by the way the police and forensic teams have behaved.'
Yesterday Kate McCann was tight-lipped and unsmiling as she drove past a photographer near the family home, a source close to a betting-shop claimed.
Loner Robert Murat, 33, however, seems set for another grilling, as the roller-coaster case proceeds.
