Wife of former Prime Minister and Celebrity Ugly Sister, Cherie Booth QC has reportedly agreed to represent a fat cat restaurateur who is challenging the Government's ban on smoking in public places. Dave West, who owns the Abracadabra restaurant and Hey Jo, a private member's bar, in St James's, is said to be paying Ms Booth (aka Mrs Blair) a "sackload of dosh" to take his case.
The Government introduced the ban on smoking to try and improve public health. The gist of Mr. West's case is that because he is rich and famous, he should be above the law and entitled to visit lung cancer on all of his customers and employees.
Cherie Booth, who has hired a removal van to carry her barristers' brief fee to the bank, is well-known for making lots of money representing people disgruntled with her husband's policies. She has represented fox-hunting toffs, terror suspects at Guantanimo Bay and families of soldiers killed in Iraq. Cynics have suggested that the Blair and Booth partnership have made a mint from husband Tony passing outrageous laws and wife Cherie successfully challenging them in the courts.
In fact, Booth has never lost a case since husband Tony became Prime Minister. BBC Law Correspondent, Joshua Cheeseburger, said "Few judges would want to upset the wife of the Prime Minister. However, now that Gordon Brown's PM, we may see a whole new ball game."
Booth is also famous for hiring expensive hairdressers to follow her around the world all at taxpayer's expense. Her biographer justified the additional costs on the basis that "If you looked like Cherie Booth, you would want beauty treatment all the time."
