Five greedy people were injured - one seriously - in a massive pile of cash on the M62 near Manchester.

Dozens of motorists stopped near an overhead bridge as huge bags of money were dropped onto the motorway. Drivers and their passengers were still busy stuffing their pockets with £20 notes when they were hit by more bags of cash containing £1 coins. One person was concussed and another had badly bruised wrists. But 74-year-old Alec Dosh suffered a fractured skull.

Police said that bank robbers had jettisoned the cash when they were being chased by patrol cars. Two women dislocated their shoulders trying to escape with really heavy handbags. Fifteen other people crawled away from the cash scene with severely bulging pockets.

The M62 was closed in both directions whilst debris from the cash was cleared. According to the Highways Authority, hundreds of people volunteered to help.

Witnesses arriving later said the scene was shocking. "There was hardly any cash left. It was awful".
