The football rumour mill was buzzing this morning as it was revealed that Manchester United striker Michael Owen was spotted at Anfield yesterday by an alert fan.
Liverpool officials were tight lipped when questioned about the matter, but the mystery remains: why would Owen be seen at his former club when he has only just signed a year long extension to his contract at Manchester United?
Sources close to the player were unanimous in stating that none of them had any knowledge of Owen visiting Liverpool, adding that he hasn't said anything to anybody relating to the club.
It's been a turbulent couple of weeks in football circles, with unsavoury revelations about players' private lives, mysterious resignations, hints of the 'tapping up' of players, managers, coaches and even tea ladies - but Michael Owen being spotted at Anfield may yet prove to be the most enigmatic conundrum of all.
But Liverpool fan, Deggsy Tarbuck was adamant that he'd seen the player leave the stadium, and shake hands with a club official as he got into his car:
"It was him," Tarbuck said. "It was deffo Mikey Owen. I seen him, like. Shook hands wid one of de officials, an den gorrin his motor and done one. Like. I could hear 'em talkin' as well. I'm not sure I should be doin' dis, burriv yers bung us anudder monkey, like, an dat, I might be able to remember worrit was I aired..."
More as we get it.
