The football world was stunned today by the news that former Rangers manager Walter Smith, who led the Ibrox club to the SPL title only days ago, has become the General Manager with fierce rivals Celtic.
The Rangers legend was paraded before the world's press at Celtic this morning.
A delighted chairman John Reid could not contain himself :
"We at Celtic Football Club are absolutely over the moon to announce that our new general manager will be the one and only Walter Smith.
Walter's record speaks for itself - he has over 20 years experience in management at the highest level (and as Scotland boss) and is one of the best man managers in the game at present.
We feel that his vast knowledge of the game and his experience at all levels will be invaluable to Neil Lennon as our manager draws up plans for next season's campaign. Walter will soon become a familiar figure next to Neil in the dugout".
Celtic sources would not comment on the suggestion that Smith's close proximity to Lennon on the touchline might make Protestant extremists think twice about continuing their campaign of threats and intimidation against the Celtic manager.
