The suspicion that Fabio Capello is wanting the Football Association to put him out of his misery and sack him was confirmed today when the beleaguered England boss reinstated John Terry as national captain.
The decision to replace Rio Ferdinand as captain provoked widespread condemnation in its own right as the Man U centre half has proved to be one of the most popular and respected captains in living memory.
Capello's reasons for removing Ferdinand were even more bizarre, especially the Italian's claims that he put much of the defender's injury problems down to "spending too much time on Facebook. Rio's body is stiffening up due to the long times he spends at his laptop".
Some commentators at World Cup 2010 suggested that Capello was trying to get himself sacked when he included in the squad injury prone Ledley King at the expense of Michael Dawson, while he played both David James and Robert Green to the exclusion of Joe Hart.
Meanwhile, the news that Terry has been reinstated has sent panic through the ranks of the national team.
Most of the WAGS have been told by their partners/husbands that they have been banned from travelling to away games "until further notice", while those women who are insisting on accompanying their men on trips have been issued with chastity belts, mouth clamps and boxing gloves.
