Rangers players El Hadji Diouf and Madjij Bougherra are to face a probe following their sendings off at the Old Firm cup replay last week.
George Hughes, SFA Discplinary Czar, made the announcement this morning at a packed press office in Park Gardens.
"I can confirm that, following the shameful events during and after the Celtic v Rangers cup replay on March 2nd, 2011, the Scottish Football Association has been left with no alternative but to take a hitherto unprecedented step.
Messrs Diouf and Bougherra are to be compelled to attend the Southern General Hospital in order to undergo a neural ultrasound probe.
The intention of this procedure is to enable doctors to ascertain whether either or both of the players might be afflicted by an existing neurological condition that would make them susceptible to displaying irrational behaviour or actions that might otherwise be regarded as being beyond the pale.
It is the firm opinion of the SFA that urgent action is needed to clamp down on the sort of outrageous events that are blighting the game in Scotland.
If the only way of doing so is to force offenders to submit to invasive surgery, then so be it".
Neither Celtic or Rangers spokespersons were available for comment.
