On the day when Chelsea looked to rub Liverpool's nose in it, the Merseysiders grabbed all three points in West London.
Having nabbed the Scousers' star striker Fernando Torres as the January transfer window closed last week, the West London blues expected to lord it over the Mersey reds on Sunday.
But Chelsea couldn't find a way through. The prize acquisition was withdrawn from the fray after 70 minutes only for Liverpool to grab the lead through Meireles - after a second mix-up between goalkeeper and defence.
It was the icing on the cake for football fans after a record-breaking, 41-goal Saturday.
EIF Sports & Features football editor Thelonious Adidas said: "Sorry mate - I'm just getting my breath back. I've been laughing solidly for hours.
"It began yesterday when Man Utd went down to Wolves - bottom-of-the-league Wolves. Walk in the park, or what? But the lads in old gold beat the buggers. I started to giggle.
"But that was tempered by Arsenal going 4-0 up at Newcastle. All over, surely. But no! When I checked back at full time it was 4-4.
"I started to laugh more loudly then. Bit of a sleepless night, Saturday, I can tell you.
"Anyway, I got myself back together for the Chelsea game - and they lose. At home. Hilarious. Premier League? It's so funny when the buggers get their noses bloodied.
"Oh, my sides are splitting. Can I get back to you tomorrow?"
