Neville's boots this morning

Manchester United have announced in a statement on their website this morning that former captain Gary Neville has hung his boots up.

Neville, 35, who has made a staggering 602 appearances for the Reds, decided to hang the boots up in the corner of the dressing room yesterday after a particularly gruelling training session during which he became 'puffed-out'.

The lifelong United fan then went for an early bath, after which he surprised teammates throwing the towel in.

Rio Ferdinand, writing on Twitter, typed:

"He just came in and hung the boots up on a peg in the corner. We all looked at each other, and someone asked: "Does this mean his career is over?" We were all stunned."

Sir Alex Ferguson, who doesn't do Twitter, said:

"I had my doubts, but when he launched that towel into the bath, the writing was on the wall (in steam), and we knew it was the end for Gary. He'll be sadly missed, but I don't know by who. Not by me."
