Former shotgun murderer and NBA also-ran Jayson Williams will have to pay $16,433 to the estate of a tree he killed in January, says a Kings County, NY Judge.
In January, mere days after being sentenced for ventilating the torso of his limo driver, Gus Christofi, with a shotgun, Jayson got good and liquored up, hopped behind the wheel of his Mercedes-Benz -- with, I'm guessing, ridiculously large, skiny rims-- and drove into a 44' American Fir tree.
"During this difficult time," said Williams, "I am aware that I caused the family of that tree great pain, and I am very sorry. Everytime I smell Pine-Sol, or kill a servant around Christmastime, I will think fondly of that tree."
Paulsboro, New Jersey is a Borough in Gloucester County, New Jersey, United States. As of the United States 2000 Census, the borough population was 6,160.
Paulsboro was formed as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 2, 1904, and was named for Samuel Phillip Paul, son of a settler.
This has nothing to do with this article. I'm just looking at houses there. Nice place!
In addition to the payment to the tree's family, Jayson was further sentenced to 364 days in prison for the DWI / arborcide case, which can not be served until Williams finishes his current 5 years hard time for the death of Cristofi.
Civil Rights groups have also voiced concerns that Williams spent more to settle with the tree's family than with that of Cristofi, but Williams' lawyer explains why.
"Let's not forget," she said, "The tree was an American Fir, and Cristofi was born in, like, Turkey or Cyprus or something."
