image for Phelps swims channel, does flip turn, returns to UK
Dover: place of record swims and outstanding fish & chips.

Michael Phelps, Olympic phenomenon, swam the English Channel in 4 hours 17 minutes, did flip turn and returned in 3 hours and 58 minutes.

Asked why he didn't stay in France for a visit Phelps replied, "My rental car was parked in Dover".

Upon returning to his car and clothes he launched on a fish & chip sight seeing visit. Driving to the best in Dover Phelps stopped at Castle Fish N Chips, The Happy Fryer, Tony's, and R Divito to get his 7000-calorie lunch.

His lunch date at Castle appeared to be Keira Knightley who is on sight for the shooting of the thriller 'Channel Swim Vendetta'.

On a short break from training in the US Michael Phelps agreed with his coach to work out during his stay. And he did -- the Channel was work for Phelps but distance-wise not something he hasn't done many times.

Dover to Callais is 22 miles and that is about what Phelps swims daily while in training.

The return was just training gravy.

To fire the furnace for such an effort Michael Phelps consumes 18 to 20 thousand calories per day.
