In an eventful week during which our national game has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons, it's reassuring to know that Liverpool Football Club are proudly flying the flag.
The Reds continue their Europa League odyssey this Thursday when they entertain the mighty Unirea Urziceni of Romania at Anfield, in what is expectantly anticipated as THE sporting event of the week.
Forget all about David Beckham facing Manchester United for the first time in Milan, forget the visit of Real Madrid to Lyons, forget Arsenal's trip to Porto and don't even bother with the Winter Olympics, because THE event of the week will take place at Anfield on Thursday evening.
Unirea Urziceni, GIANTS of Romanian football play their home games in their cavernous amphitheatre of a 7,000 seat stadium, which is located at the turn-off by the vineyards. They will however be playing Liverpool at the Steaua Bucharest Stadium because they're expecting a bumper crowd.
Although the return leg probably won't be a sell out.
To give some idea of the importance of this tie to the natives of Liverpool, we can quote a lone Liverpool fan we encountered on Walton Breck Road, who told us:
"Unirea Urziceni! The Europa League! This is the BIG TIME lar! Romania here I come!"
More as we get it.
