Joe Kinnear, the outspoken Newcastle United manager, has apologised on the club's website about comments he made at the weekend when he called referee Martin Atkinson a 'Mickey Mouse ref'.
The Magpies boss now believes the comments were "ill-advised".
Kinnear, who was in trouble with the FA recently for a news conference that was littered with a torrent of four-letter swear words, accused Atkinson of being incompetent when he failed to award Newcastle a free-kick in the passage of play immediately before Fulham were awarded a penalty.
Newcastle lost the game 2-1.
The apology was made in a short statement today, with Kinnear accepting he was wrong to have likened Atkinson to the Disney character, and saying that he was sorry for any upset or embarrassment caused.
Part of the statement went:
"I now realise I should not have made a comparison between Martin Atkinson and Mickey Mouse. The comment was ill-advised and unfair. Mickey Mouse is a fine, upstanding oartoon character, and bears no resemblance whatsoever to that pillock referee, who is a complete and utter fucking wanker."
The FA Respect programme is in tatters.
