The coach of the men's national table tennis team, Teodor Gheorghe, has announced that star tennis players James Blake and Andy Roddick will be partnering for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Blake and Roddick will be suiting up as doubles partners for the men's table tennis competition in addition to playing for the tennis team.
"Both are fierce competitors on the tennis court, so I thought to myself, Teodor, if you put them together on a smaller court they could be the Great American Hope." said coach Gheorghe about his brilliant new players.
And Blake and Roddick will have to do nothing short of domination to even have a chance against proverbial powerhouses such as China, Japan, and Korea. The major movers and shakers of the game like left handed phenom, Chen Qi, will also have something to say about the Dream Team's success. In a game trumped by Asian countries it may finally be the USA's turn to see the gold if this Dream Team works out.
James Blake was asked if he had ever played table tennis before and he answered,"I can't lie, I haven't. But it can't be that hard to play a miniature version of tennis, right?"
Andy Roddick was asked the same question and his response was more reassuring,"You mean Ping Pong? Yeah sure, I played that lots of times when I was a kid. Nothing recent though, it just wasn't that hard so I stopped focusing on it."
Unfortunatley if Blake and Roddick are in that means one pair is out of the Olympic bid for the USA. This disappointment goes to partners Khoa Nguyen and Mark Hazinski who hoped to place this year.
"It's just a really hard hit to take! I did not spend all that time in my mother's basement playing table tennis for nothing!" said Mark Hazinski.
We all appreciate the sacrifice Nguyen and Hazinski made for the team. Now Blake and Roddick can show that they can dominate in two sports. So make way China, and be sure to watch, for the American Dream Team!
