Fans at last night's Joe Calzaghe/ Bernard Hopkins weigh-in were astonished to see the event turn into an unprecedented Silly War Of Words, as the two boxer's childish antics took over.
The weigh-in, and, in fact, any other pre-bout meeting between protagonists, usually ends up as a verbal sparring opportunity which neither can afford to miss out on, but this encounter turned out even more infantile than the norm.
First, Hopkins, 46, told Welshman Calzaghe:
"You are silly if you think you can overcome my superior fighting ability."
To which Calzaghe replied:
"You are the silliest boxer I have ever met!"
The conversation continued in this silly vein for a number of minutes (15), until Hopkins' trainer Art Schmuck stepped in, shouting:
"Enough of this silliness! To the best man, the spoils!"
whereupon all participants left the scene for the comfort of their dressing rooms.
The fight is expected to be exciting, but not as exciting as the Silly War Of Words, which should not be confused with War Of The Worlds, a movie starring Tom Cruise. Tom Cruise should not be confused with Cruiserweight, which is a boxing weightclass between Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight.
Joe Calzaghe is a Swansea City fan.
