Verona, Italy --
The newest Olympic sport has been announced today. Bocce ball. Yes, the Italian equivalent of lawn bowling, is coming to the summer Olympics in the year 2008.
"It's a great day for Italy. A great day for bocce or bocchi or bocchia or any other spelling you can find for it on Google. We are so happy to bring this exciting sport to the Olympics." Guiseppe Che-fai said to a group of old men playing the sport in the middle of a street.
"Not since Alberto Tomba has the Italian sporting community been so poised to take home a gold medal," some catty person commented.
The sport is also popular in the States, especially in areas with a high Italian immigration such as San Francisco, Boston and New York, where a variant of the sport, called Extreme Bocce is also played.
"Extreme Bocce is played in high traffic areas. Many players get killed playing it this way, but hey, fuggedaboutit. Whacha gonna do fer fun these days, anyway?" Joey Whatsamattafohyou said.
The world Bocce champion is currently Pope John Paul II. Yes, that Pope John Paul. "He likes to play in the Vatican. He has been a superstar at the sport since he played at Cardinal College." A representative said today.
No word on where the representative came from and no confirmation as to whether the Pope would cut back on his duties to prepare for the Olympics either.
