The cost of the 2012 London Olympics is a staggering £13.97 over budget.
The Treasury and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) are holding emergency meetings in an effort to find how such a misjudgement could happen.
Shadow culture secretary Hugo Swire said the news was "staggering", and said Chancellor Gordon Brown should take responsibility, because he signed off the original budget.
"The £13.97 over budget came as a complete shock" said Mr Swire "We knew the original estimate could rise, possibly to a figure of £6.50 but this is really bad news indeed".
The deputy leader of the Liberal Democrats, Vincent Cable, questioned whether so much money should be spent. "We just cannot have an open-ended budget and people just signing cheques. It isn't going to happen and it's not right".
Sebastian Newbold Coe, Baron Coe, KBE (Seb to his friends) who was the head of the 2012 London Olympic bid ran away when our Olympic reporter from Bexhill requested a response regarding the estimated new budget.
Steve Ovett who also has a reputation for running fast said "Sebs a sod to catch when he gets going, I spent most of my career trying to catch him, You think £13.97 is a lot, the bugger still owes me twenty quid".
