England are out of the World Cup, after crashing to defeat for a second time, losing 2-1 to Uruguay. Other results also conspired against them, and for the first time in World Cup history they will exit before reaching the knockout stages.
Coach Roy Hodgson was philosophical about his team's pathetic efforts. "I think you have to hand it to them," he chirped, "They played really well. I mean, this team is one of the most talented England squads we've ever seen. They've got strength and stamina and if they continue to play like that, then they could go on to win the World Cup."
Realising what he had just said, he quickly corrected himself. "I mean, obviously they haven't won the World Cup. But I really feel that they would have been good enough, if only the other teams there weren't so much better."
