ST. LOUIS (AP)-- Minutes after winning their 10th World Series here on Friday, the St. Louis Cardinals attacked Rush Limbaugh with baseball bats after spotting him smoking a cigar in the stands of Busch Stadium.
The red-clad Cardinals home crowd enthusiastically applauded the dramatic win as well as the beating of Limbaugh, shouting that they were all fans of Michael J. Fox who Limbaugh had recently insulted for having Parkinson's Disease and endorsing stem-cell research in an ad.
The Cardinals defeated the Detroit Tigers 4-2 to end a five-game victory in the best-of-seven championship of the Major League Baseball's playoffs. It was the first World Series title in 24 years for the Cardinals.
"I don't blame the boys at all for beating up Limbaugh," said Cardinals manager Tony La Russa later at a postgame news conference. "They played brilliantly. All the tension of the game, then spotting a sleazebag watching us, well they obviously just snapped."
A grotesquely disfigured Limbaugh limped off the field as the Cards, the Tigers and many fans continued to pelt him with baseballs, shouting, "Fox! Fox! Fox!"
St. Louis rookie Adam Wainright who had just struck out Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge to preserve the 4-2 victory and give the Cardinals their first World Series since 1982, threw a final pitch that hit Limbaugh on the nose as he fled the stadium.
The political ad in which Parkinson's-afflicted Michael J. Fox talks about stem cell research had prompted conservative radio talk show host Limbaugh to argue that Fox was "either off his medication or acting" while filming the commercial.
"Michael J. Fox is allowing his illness to be exploited and in the process is shilling for a Democrat politician," Limbaugh had said of the ad for Senate candidate Claire McCaskill of Missouri.
After the severe beating however, St. Louis police indicated that no charges would be laid.
"Those lying neoconservative scumbags deserve everything they get," said Police Captain Louis Lunchbucket. "Maybe stem cell therapy can help Limbaugh regain his looks. What a pig."
