As Spain took all the glory by saving the best till last and coasting to a 4-0 win over Italy in the final of Euro 2012, England boss Roy Hodgson declared himself happy with his own teams performance.
At a press conference at Wembley this morning, former Liverpool, Fulham and West Brom manager congratulated Spain but pointed out how shrewd the England results were. "You have to remember, we came home unbeaten during normal play, only exiting to eventual finalists Italy on penalties, which doesn't really count. In the group stages, we drew with France before beating Sweden and Ukraine, before the draw with Italy after 90 minutes and extra-time"
When asked how England might have coped against the eventual winners, he answered "It might have looked accidental, but we actually avoided Spain not once, but twice in the tournament, first in the quarter-final, and secondly in the final. Our players can hold their heads high, especially the way Spain finished off Italy last night"
England's next match is again against Italy in August, before starting their World Cup qualifying campaign in September.
