Bill Murray returned this year to entertain the crowd in between crushing a few golf balls at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament, but one prank on the famous par three 7th hole, cost Tiger Woods a hole-in-one.
Murray, a Saturday Night Live comedic icon, Oscar nominee and avid golfer, was in full costume and character as Carl Spackler, grounds keeper and storage barn resident from the movie Caddy Shack. Murray reportedly went so far as to smell the part, and addressed numerous women spectators on the course as "Mrs. Crane", asking one blonde if she happened to be a "monkey woman".
It was the prank on hole number seven however, that caught everyone's attention as Murray lay in wait for Tiger Woods approach into the par three. Woods' ball bounced twice on the green then right into the cup, while Murray reportedly pulled a string leading to the cup, releasing a small gopher from the hole and knocking Woods ball out and another 15 feet away.
The crowd thought it was hilarious. Woods was not amused. Some words were exchanged between entertainment and golf legends, but Woods took a two-putt, registered a par on the hole and moved on. Murray's caddy was heard to comment after the incident, "I don't know what he was so cheesed about. He can sink his ball into fresh hole on the first try, pretty much whenever he wants".
Murray pointed his finger at his caddy's nose. "Look pal. I do the jokes, you carry the bag, OK?"
