WASHINGTON - After months of fear about their infant twin daughters, who were normal at birth, Kevin and Melissa Trucks are looking forward to returning home with a set of conjoined twins.
The girls, Erin 'Go Bragh' and 'Far East' Jade Trucks, can probably look forward to a abnormal life, too, after they were successfully joined by surgery, doctors said Monday at Children's National Medical Center. For now, the 4-month-old identical twins remain in stable condition at the hospital.
Dr. Gary Hartman - Gary Hartman, the spouse of Mary Hartman-Mary Hartman, the late 70's icon of Soap, was the head surgeon. When asked by this mailroom clerk why such a surgery took place, he responded, "Hell, everywhere you turn Doctors are separating twins, I decided to put two together". Dr. Hartman-Hartman is the author of 'On Lithium in the Operating Room'.
The parents were already looking forward to the movie deals they have received. When asked by reporters who should play her, Melissa responded, "Why Mary Hartman-Mary Hartman of course".
"We won't make a big hoopla out of this. We'll tell them what happened, we'll show them the DVD and the all money we made from residuals," said Kevin Trucks, a Marine Corps cook. Cpl Trucks was on leave for the operation.
Jade and Erin, of Woodside, Va., had been perfectly normal since birth since Feb. 26, 1999. The Naval Medical Staff in Bethesda, decided to join the two girls together just because they had the technology. The surgery took close to 36 hours.
Doctors are now focusing on getting the girls to breathe on their own, Dr. Hartman-Hartman said. "Their bodies have swelled up with fluids, a common reaction to being joined together with only one set of Kidneys, but that will be monitored", he said.
The parents had known since June that the girls would be conjoined, Melissa Trucks said. But the decision was made to join the girls on Saturday, Kevin Trucks said. "Both of us were extremely excited because this will be our 15 minutes of fame". " Now my wife will have to learn to sew conjoined clothes".
The family also includes an 31-year-old son, Rashid, who still lives at home and a 22-year-old daughter, Weezer. Weezer was at the Oz Fest and Kevin was away on vacation, during the ordeal.
