image for India's DRDO loses one scientist every day - "just careless, really"
Last seen going to the loo on a quiet Wednesday in January.

India's premier military research body, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), loses one scientist every day amid the inefficient bustle of typical official top-secret bureaucracy.

Figures from the defence ministry tell the sordid tale of the DRDO.

According to the ministry, a total of 1,107 scientists, mostly fit young men, have gone missing from the DRDO between 2003 and 2007, implying that on average one is mislaid [sic] per day.

"These scientists work in the DRDO for two to three years on important confidential projects, in close quarters with other young scientists, then one day, they simply don't come home to their wives," said a highly placed DRDO official on condition of anonymity, cabfare and a dinner date with John Barrowman.

"We have a strength of 7,000 scientists at the moment, and the carelessness attrition rate is about 6.3 percent. And what is worsening the situation is that we are not able to attract enough fit candidates to fill up these vacancies," the DRDO official said.

"Losing so many scientists is just careless, really, but what can you do?" he said.
