Down the pan: Branson's daftass space program bombs

Mojave Desert - (Daftass Mess): Richard Branson's megalomaniac aspirations to enter the space race have bombed with the news today that an explosion ripped apart a test of the rocket's propulsion system, leaving three engineers dead and three seriously injured.

Branson had bought an off-plan rocket system from the Jet Convulsion Laboratories for a reported $200 million last year.

On Thursday witnesses said they saw his attempt at the world's first commercial spaceport at Mojave, California, go down the pan when a huge explosion obliterated all the flight equipment of the new SpaceShipTwo prototype for Virgin Galactic's eight-seater private rockets.

The system had been modelled on a corn oil and flax weed oil hybrid fuel system designed to bring "green" travel to space.

Branson's stake of $200 million was uninsured and means he has just made a huge dent in his personal fortune about which he constantly brags to Forbes List members.

Branson's faith in the project has always been rock solid as has his trust in the daftass so-called maverick genius
secretive aerospace designer Burt Rutan who has pioneered the development of the Branson rockets.

His company Scaled Composites was about to be snapped up for a reported $5 billion by engineering and aviation specialists Northrop Grumman.

"I guess the deal is off," Branson's spokesman said today.
