Toyota announced that next year's offerings of energy efficient cars will include their new "Nitrorider" vehicle, capable of achieving speeds close to 50 miles an hour on a tank of liquid nitrogen.

A spokesman for the company said that while the cost of the vehicle is somewhat prohibitive, he did expect that the cost of the car would come down at least a few thousand dollars in the next few years. "The big American auto makers never saw this one coming" he said while having a lunch of wheat grass and barley burgers, topped off by a bowl of alfalfa pudding. "I didn't really know what nitrogen was at first, I thought it was some kind of fertilizer. " he said, then added "But it's a chemical element, like oxygen or water."

He also expressed some concern with the availability of liquid nitrogen, adding that "it may be more plentiful where it's cold, like Minnesota."

Toyota hopes to get close to 55 miles an hour from the car. Given that the car can only run about an hour on a full tank of nitrogen, it will probably have to accelerate pretty fast.

Consumers were hopeful that the car would be ready soon. One man said that when the car was ready for sale he was planning to camp outside the dealership. He added "but that's because I'm homeless."
