A study by The British Paper Group has shown that whit backgrounds on computer screens and plain white paper gets the creative juices flowing in people.
"We've tried lots of different coloured backgrounds, and different coloured paper," said Gary White, publicist for the BPG. "White is the most adept at getting people creating."
The study has shown that red paper or red computer screens are the worst for getting authors writing and artists drawing, whilst black can leave people unhappy with what they've produced. #White, however, saw productivity among creative people rise by ninety-five percent compared with transparent sheets.
"There is something about the urge to sully the purity of white paper," said White, "as far as we can tell. You just don't get that urge with any other colour."
Pastel green is almost as successful, but still doesn't come close to the colour white.
"The classic image of writers block is an author staring at a blank sheet of white paper," said White. "We don't think this is the case. Staring at a blank page actually creates ideas, not blocks them."
The British Paper Group gave ten writers complaining of writers block a sheet of white paper and a pen, and told them to write any old crap on it. Nine of them immediately came up with ideas, and the tenth wrote "any old crap" on the paper in large letters. However, as she was J K Rowling, this paper is now worth half a million dollars.
"If you're stuck for ideas," said White. "Stare at some blank paper. It's a wonder cure!"
