To detect whether a man is telling the truth or lying, it's best to use your left ear, according to Dr Tilly Woppa of the Hearing Research Institute, Alabama.
In over 75% of listeners tested, lie detection rates were better when listening through the left ear. However, when women were speaking the messages, listeners were better at lie detection when using their right ears.
"Our advice for dinner parties," said Dr Woppa, "is to always sit with a man on your left side and a woman on your right."
However, our reporter has since realized that he was holding the phone to his left ear when Dr Woppa told him this. So who knows?
Further studies showed that to be even more proficient at lie detection, it's a good idea to observe which side of the mouth the 'liar' is trying to speak out of. Most people were better observers when they used their right eye.
"Using your right eye frees up the left side of the brain, hence left ear listening is better," said Dr Woppa, with her hand over her mouth, and wearing very dark glasses.
