In order to show support at the Olympics, it's been necessary to buy a flag for each country supported, but no longer. Lancashire applelet design company, App-N, have launched the iFlag.
"I couldn't get tickets for the Olympics," said App World! editor Mac Buck, "but I can see a use for iFlag beyond the Olympics. It's a great frivolous app."
Designed primarily for the iPad, due to the greater screen size, the iFlag will also run on the iPhone, with the caveat that the image will be smaller.
"I guess that caveat is in there to prevent litigation," said Buck. "Either that or App-N think everybody who owns an iPhone is stupid."
The applelet comes pre-loaded with the flags of every country in the world, plus the additional ones that appear at the Olympics, but aren't actually countries.
"More than that," said Buck, "you can download more flags. Want a state flag? They're there for just seventy-five cents. Sporting teams packs, ensign flags for ships, all available and easily downloaded as and when they're needed."
The app also allows the owner to do semaphore using the appropriate flag. Buck does not see why anybody would want to do this.
"Semaphore's for sending messages over distance," he said. "You're doing it with a phone...just give the person a ring."
For the lazy, instead of waving the flag, the app will waggle itself letting iFlag owners just hold their iPad or iPhone in the air.
"Version two will let people design their own flags," said Buck. "I can't wait for this version, so I can have an App World! flag."
