Taking advantage of previously released news events and an internet search frenzy that mixed YU55 asteroid news with a Kim Kardashian doctor visit, NASA has decided to take advantage of the added publicity by changing the name of the asteroid to Kardashian-31.
NASA's new publicity director, Terrence Mastin, admits that with recent budget cuts and no new space projects planned for the near future, they needed to do something that kept NASA's name in the press. "We felt that it would be great to name this near earth orbiting body in honor of Kim's orbiting body" said Mastin with all the tact of a virgin visiting a house of ill repute.
Mastin's assessment of the publicity situation was accurate however, with internet hit rates and popularity for NASA climbing sharply following the Kardashian-31 announcement. "We're not too proud to pander to the public", says Mastin. "The Kardashian family has been doing it for years. We'd like to have half of that publicity for our little NASA program that might, just, maybe be a little more socially and scientifically important".
No comments were offered from the Kardashian camp about the announcement, though NASA did receive a letter from the family's lawyer demanding the "31", which was chosen to represent Kim's current age, be reduced to 29.
