As the Spoof's premier reviewer I am sent those things to review that most reviewers would balk at. Today's review is no exception.
It is the Rimmington Epilator for Men, model XS90, which replaces the previous model, the XS60.
The first thing to notice about the XS90 is the array of attachments that come with it. This is an essential part of any gadget for men. Women are happy with a device for removing hair. Men require a device for removing hair that has an extending handle, pre-trimmer, hair collector and a comfort grip that changes colour depending on the amount of charge left.
The XS60 had all of these, but the XS90 ups the game with a fifteen hundred revolutions per minute head compared with the XS60's meagre five hundred RPM. Additionally, the head is interchangeable to allow it to epilate nose and ear hair. A third head is a precision epilator, perfect for epilating right up to a ruler straight line. Although you have to provide your own ruler. This is very important in a man's epilator. Women's versions are used to remove all hair, whilst men prefer to leave a little behind.
There are copious instructions with the XS90, although they boil down to not putting the epilator in water and not using it to remove head hair without the pre-trimmer.
The extending handle is extremely useful for reaching the hair across the shoulders, though, as I discovered, when approaching the hair line it is wise to use the precision head if you wish to avoid getting your head hair trapped in the rapidly rotating head and jerking your neck back so severely you get whiplash.
The device is quite noisy, sounding like a formula one car revving its engine. Rimmington have managed to make the noise sound very manly, with a throaty growl that would please many a tractor enthusiast. That said, when using the ear hair epilator, it left me with a ringing in my ears that took some time to die down, and I can no longer hear the doorbell.
The device excels at those precision areas, but it also does a good job on large areas. For men who like a nice hairless chest, in a mere three swathes, it can give silky soft skin with nary a hair in sight. The ankle area is a little trickier, and there were certain areas I wasn't willing to put a 1500RPM rotating drum anywhere near, so I cannot comment on it's budgie smuggler line abilities.
A word of warning to men who have not used an epilator before: IT HURTS LIKE HELL! The skin also becomes quite red and swollen. It is advisable to do a small area at a time.
The hair removal lasts for approximately three weeks, which is just enough time for the redness and swelling to go down. That said, the red, swollen skin is very smooth.
All in all, I am going to give the Rimmington Epilator XS90 four thumbs. It is an impressive device, but the pain is too great for me to go higher.
