image for A Tense Meeting Sweet dry Sherry

Penny and Terry were a bit worried. Their parents had arranged to meet each other and Sylvia Smythe was preparing a meal that would suit everyone.

Eel Pie was discussed and slipped away, Fish & Chips was a favourite for a while until Penny announced she could not eat an endangered species.

Finally everyone was happy with Toad in the Hole and Ice cream for dessert, or bread and butter pudding for afters or rice pudding for pud.

Terry came with his parents and everyone was introduced to each other.

'Would you like a sherry?' Rupert Smythe asked Terry's Dad.

'That would be lovely' answered his wife Matilda before Joe could say a word.

'Sweet or Dry?'

'Oh thank you, so kind.'

A puzzled Rupert gave one of each to the Smith's.

'Isn't it strange' said Sylvia 'we are Smythe and you are Smith.'

'It's a class thing' said Joe. 'Smythe is a posh way of saying Smith. An even posher way is to be called something like Ponsonby-Smythe.'

'You will have your little joke, my dear' chirped Matilda.

'I am told by my daughter that we mustn't talk about Politics or Religion' said Rupert with a smile.

'Penny is developing into a good freethinking Socialist' said Joe.

'He will have his little joke' said a desperate Matilda.

'Well, I am sure it is one of those foolish phases children experience as they grow up' said Rupert.

'Foolish phases! I've been an atheist and a blood red Socialist all my life!' shouted an irate Joe.

Terry thought it was time to change the subject.

'It has been lovely weather today.'

'Yes' said Penny 'the sun was so welcome after the rain we have had'
