While visiting Salam Massachusetts Jennifer Lopez recalls the life of her ancestral aunt Wilma Elvira Lopez who in March of 1692 was arrested for inappropriate behavior and then castrated by the courts. A month after her castration she was tarred and feathered before anxious onlooker.
Wilma Lopez was a great ancestor of Jennifer from her father's side of the family. She was born in Katmandu and at the age of nineteen she traveled with her family by bout to the colonies to live in Salam.
When in Salam, Wilma got a job at a neighbor's farm milking cows in the early morning hours. Her employer was a Dutchman named Balderic De Vries. In her diary, Wilma describes the beautiful sunset mornings on Balderic's farm, and she wrote of her love for the farmer's seventeen year old son Baldram De Vries.
During a dreadful morning on March 1, 1692, while she milked the cows, the farmer's youngest son Eberhard approached her and asked her what a woman looks like in the nude. In the heat of passion, Wilma unclothed herself and masturbated in front of Eberhard.
At that moment three of Eberhard's sisters walked by the barn to check on the chicken coup. A fox had been borrowing into the chicken coup to steal chickens and the farmer had set a trap for him.
When they saw Wilma masturbating naked in front of their youngest brother they screamed out for their mother Baltelda De Vries who came to the barn running in a panic.
Wilma was then handed over to the town magistrates who locked her in jail. She was taken to the court room in the afternoon hours for public examination. The farmer's three daughters Baltje, Saakje and Haasje served as witness for the prosecutor.
The three witnesses exaggerated the event by making statements that Wilma drew a pentagram on the ground and she inserted a lit candle into herself. They said she called upon the devil to make her a man when she got caught with Eberhard.
A jury of elder women who broke out in tears condemned her to be castrated.
A midwife performed the castration in her home using a knife. In her journal the midwife describes how she carefully opened her up and delicately cut out both her ovaries. She wrote how Wilma screamed from the pain and begged her to stop.
After the castration the midwife sewed up the wounds using horse hair. She explains in her journal how Wilma developed a high fever a day latter.
Jennifer Lopez said, "It was a sad and tragic event for my family and we are still living with the memories of her punishment."
