image for Debate Rages: Just What The Heck Color WERE Elizabeth Taylor's Eyes?
Where Did Liz's Eyes Fit On The Color Chart?

Doubtsville, USA - Since the passing of Dame Elizabeth, new and disturbing questions have arisen about the color of her eyes, which filmgoers and fans have been told were a rare shade of violet. However, a few brave doubters have stepped forward to challenge what they call the "violet eye hoax".

An online forum , "Violet Eyes, Violet Lies" Dot Com has sprung up and already boasts 5,000 squabbling, hyperactive members. Many are self-confessed conspiracy nuts who absolutely LIVE to debunk anything remotely debunkable, but there is a hardcore and quite vociferous element who seem to have a degree of credibility.

The founder of the forum, Tanya Makepiece, says she's tried and tried and squinted and squinted, and "for the life of me, I can't see where this woman had violet eyes." She emphasizes that she gave La Liz the benefit of the doubt, looking through thousands of photos and old movie magazines and pictures of Elizabeth on the internet.

"I had hoped against hope to see the violet color that Hollywood told me all my life was there. Even my mom told me they were violet. I believe in fairytales and lovely things and I wanted to believe this one too, with all my heart and soul. But I just cannot."

"From what I and most of my best friends can figure out, her eyes were just a nice deep shade of blue. NOT violet. There's a big difference between a nice shade of blue and violet."

Other forum members feel Liz's eyes were a half shade of periwinkle with a hint of aquamarine mixed with a dash of sea green, depending on the time of day or camera angles. Several vicious fights have broken out on the forum, as members seek to pin down the exact blend of color hues that comprised Ms. Taylor's eyes. So far, none have reached a definitive answer.

Says another member: "The eye thing was all a stunt. You notice how costumers often dressed Liz in purples and violets? Like in Cleopatra. she wears a lot of purple and so does Richard Burton and Rex Harrison. Like a subliminal thing, ya know, to bounce color off her retina or something."

One particularly doubtful member says her eyes were actually dark brown and also pointed out (rightfully so), that in the film "Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf" Taylor's eyes were black and white. Not a hint of violet or blue anywhere in that movie. However, the dark brown allegations were too cockeyed even for these doubters and this person was quickly shunned. There's always a few of those types - they get all wrapped up in a thing and obsess and obsess and lose sight of reality. Blue vs. violet. Violet vs. blue. The debate goes round and round.

Unfortunately, there may never be an answer to this vexing question. One thing is certain: Liz DID NOT have Bette Davis eyes....
