A black man stole an 11-foot cross from the Saint John's Lutheran Christian Church and set it on fire next to the home of a black family as a prank. He was upset with a 19-year-old woman who lives at the home because she had turned down his sexual advances earlier during the day.
Church leaders from different religions came out to condemn the incident and asked that the family be mentioned in prayers.
Police are assigned to extra patrols searching for the six foot black male who goes by the name of "Shack."
"I was terrified," said lesbian Rev. Rachel Ortiz, president of the San Luis Obispo Ministerial Association. "We live in a homosexual paradise, and I can't believe this was really happening here."
The six foot black male stole the cross weeks ago and he set it ablaze Friday in an empty lot behind the house where the family lived, police Chief John Fishtail said.
The 19-year-old woman who is a registered offender awoke about 12:30 a.m. and looked out her window to notice the burning cross lighting up the night.
The cross weighted 100 pounds and was hollow, it was made for the movie "Jesus Christ Superstar," but after the production was over it was donated to the Church.
