Los Angeles: Jason Statham and Kelly Brook have been announced as the leads in a Hollywood remake of Tommy Steele's 1967 musical Half A Sixpence, also starring Gwyneth Paltrow and Danny Dyer.
At a press conference yesterday the action star Statham admitted that this will take his career in a new direction: "Singing and dancing are not something I've done before, but I asked myself 'If James Bond himself can do it in Mamma Mia, then why not me?'"
Director Michael Bay, the man behind the Transformer movies, hinted that there would be more action sequences than in the Tommy Steele original. "I will be making full use of CGI to deliver more flash, more bang and more wallop." he said, before stating that the story was to be relocated to the present day and set against a background of the banking crisis.
When asked how a present day adaptation would retain references to a "sixpence", Bay appeared confused, and admitted he was unaware that the coin had fallen out of use with the 1971 decimalisation of British currency.
