image for Mel Gibson's Wife, Robyn Files Legal Papers For Divorce!

Although friends and family knew that the long suffering Robyn had had enough several weeks ago when Mel was first caught with another woman, she's just now ending their long standing battles over his booze binges and fits of rage!

Ironically, she filed the divorce paper on the day before Good Friday at LA County Superior Court!

According to a family friend, the couple did not sign a prenuptial agreement when they wed in Australia almost thirty years ago in 1980. So according to California law, she's entitled to half Mel's $1 billion fortune!

She appears to have taken the time to try to get the best attorney possible in the coming legal clash as her lawyer is Laura Wasser, who's handled divorces for Britney Spears, Stevie Wonder and Angelina Jolie.

"Throughout our marriage and separation we have always strived to maintain the privacy and integrity of our family and will continue to do so," Robyn and Mel Gibson said in an issued press statement.

So it appears the marriage has been heading this way for a good while.

The Gibsons have 7 children, but only one -- Tom, who just turned 10, is a minor. In Robyn's legal papers, filed in L.A. County Superior Court, she seeks joint physical and legal custody of Tom.

Robyn is also asking for spousal support and attorneys fees.

Friends say the problems began after Mel's drunk driving arrest in 2006.

Thus far, Gibson's only comment has been, "Wasser? Wasser? Is that Jewish?"
