In a move that will shock fans and foes alike, the shock rocker Marilyn Manson is to star as the leading role in Andrew Lloyd Webber's popular musical 'The Phantom of the Opera' it was confirmed yesterday at a press conference in London.
Manson (Real name Brian Warner) has had a passion for the Phantom of the Opera ever since he first saw the play in 1989.
"I first saw the Phantom of the Opera on the London stage in 1989" Marilyn told us. "The moment I first saw the musical, I knew that the role of Erik (The Phantom) was made for me. I found the theme of isolation and solitude for being different a common theme from my own life and experiences".
Andrew Lloyd Webber, who approached Marilyn to play the part, is delighted that he has accepted. "I have to admit that at first I was sceptical we could pull this off." says Andrew. "But it seems the Goth thing is really popular with kids these days, so it will pull in a new fresh audience. My own daughter for example is mad about Buffy the Vampire slayer, and occasionally likes to read Ann Rice novels"
However there have been some difficulties.
"At times it has been difficult to domesticate Mr. Manson to the theatre." Andrew told us. "For example, only yesterday during a rehearsal for 'Music of the night' he urinated on Sarah Brightman, slit his wrists on stage and then went on to set fire to the scenery for act 5. We still have a long way to go it seems".
So what's the future for Marilyn Manson? "I think this will open up a new doors for my career. Maybe I will even get to play that bald guy from 'The King and I'" He chuckles.
You can see Marilyn's performance as the Phantom at the albert hall in London between the dates of February 18th and March 6th.
