With 9 comedy records, 6 original movies, a role in TV's That 70's Show, a crime record and documentary in the bag, and now 4 months into a new tour with his old partner Cheech Marin, Tommy Chong has made himself known in the world as the biggest stoner and number one hippie everywhere. But, big news broke out today when Canadian-Chinese Chong admitted he's never really smoked weed- ever!
Back in the 70s, Tommy Chong met Richard "Cheech" Marin at his comedy club, and the 2 formed a comedy duo that would forever change the face of comedy. Together, the pair, under the name "Cheech and Chong" laughed in the face of the government through the 70s and 80s with their stoner comedy, from comedy albums such as "Cheech and Chong" and their hit 1978 Paramount film, Up in Smoke. When Cheech split apart with Chong in the mid-80s to do more serious roles (well, Disney films), Chong remained playing a stoner hippie in movie and TV show cameos. But mouths dropped and eyes widened earlier today when Chong admitted to never having smoked pot in his life!
"It's true... I've been living a lie... for the sake of comedy," Chong confessed. "I guess I got so caught up, pretending to be some burnt out dude, I forgot I was just playing around, and became famous for what I'm not." Chong admitted to only going along with the stoner comedy for the sake of sticking with Cheech, whom he'd formed a budding friendship. "I've smelled pot, seen it, been in the same room with Cheech when he smoked... but I never took a toke and I never inhaled... I just had to get this off my chest before it killed me." Chong later said "I'm ashamed, I've let my fans down."
"I can't believe what I'm hearing," commented a shocked Cheech; "It's like you've been lying to me for 30 years man... I can't believe you'd do this to me, when we were having so much fun!" The 2 proceeded to argue, prompting this reporter to leave the room.
Shelby Chong, Tommy's wife, would not comment on the situation, but simply said that "Consider the next 2-3 shows uh, postponed... for now."
