British funny man and 'ad-lib' king Ricky Gervais announced today that if he was to be offered the host's job of presenting The Oscars he'd have to turn it down. 'It's not that I'm crap at my job', Gervais quipped 'It's just that I don't work without a script'.
The 47 year old roly poly speaking to Genre Magazine said 'It's terrifying to think that these type of ceremonies are presented by hosts who do everything off the cuff'. 'It's not that I don't do 'off the cuff'. 'I've done it many a time, especially late at night after a good Pot Noodle', Ricky added briefly glancing at a piece of paper in his hand.
The Oscars have a rich tradition of hosts who have complete freedom of presenting the role. Normally popular and up to date comedians are gagging to get the host's job. And in certain quarters looked upon as a peak in anyone's career.
Gervais went on to add, 'Of course If I was offered the job I'd take it, if I ballsed it up it wouldn't be my fault'.
Ricky Gervais is currently rehearsing the role of Widow Twankey in the Pantomime Aladdin, at some old theatre in the North of England
