Both Hollywood and the book world were shocked when it was announced that super couple Cormac and Jenny McCarthy recently filed for divorce.
The two were introduced by mutual friends in 1996 when Mr. McCarthy, 1992 National Book Award-winning author of All the Pretty Horses, was called in to doctor the script of The Stupids, a movie in which Ms. McCarthy, 1994 Playboy Playmate of the Year, had a small role opposite Tom Arnold and Jessica Lundy.
The McCarthys married in a Las Vegas chapel a few weeks after their first meeting, with the bride's younger sister Amy and a friend of the groom, novelist William Gay, acting as witnesses to the ceremony.
"I knew he'd fuck it up," Gay commented upon hearing the news of their split.
Sources close to the McCarthys say that the marriage had been strained for quite some time, and that the couple became estranged after an altercation in a pool hall on the Mexican border. Ms. McCarthy is reported to have physically assaulted a young prostitute who frequently accompanied Mr. McCarthy to local cock fights.
Other factors adding to their estrangement included the busy couple's conflicting work schedules, plus Mr. McCarthy's refusal to disclose the location of his primary residence to Ms. McCarthy.
The couple has no children, and by all accounts will part amicably.
