American Idol, king of reality shows on U.S. television, has announced a new spin off to air this summer. The show, titled "Not the American Idol," will begin running one week after the regular program ends in May and will continue through December. Simon Cowell, the caustic British judge, will serve as star and executive producer of this show.
Eric Banes, network executive for FOX, gave the following statement in his press conference announcing the new show:
"In depth research has shown us that most people watch American Idol just to hear Simon insult people who can't sing. In fact, there are now bar games where people have to take a drink each time he says that something is bloody awful."
"Therefore, we decided to just have shows to showcase the really bad performances. Each season, we will crown a worst singer in America. We've partnered with that website, so now fans really can vote for the worst."
"Randy Jackson will not be there for the summer as he says that he has to produce new albums by everyone famous. Paula Abdul will be in rehab again or chasing young eighteen year olds or something, so she won't be on the show. Ryan Seacrest has also scheduled time to look at himself in the mirror and to actually shave, so he also won't be on the new show."
"Instead, we've hired Sanjaya Malakar, probably our worst singer ever, as one of our celebrity judges. Milli Vanilli will act as our other judge (though I don't know if it will be Milli or Vanilli or if they will switch off from week to week)."
"We are proud to announce that our host for the new show will be none other than William Shatner. Since he probably released the worst album of all time, it is fitting that he help to pick the worst singers."
