Disney is reportedly working on a remake of the first High School Musical film. Rumors are flying fast and furious across Hollywood and the entertainment community about what form the new HSM will take, and who will be in the cast, including possibly Miley Cyrus. Officially Disney is keeping mum about even the existence of the project, but there have been several leaks.
In one scenario the remake will be set in an inner city school with predominantly black actors. Lil' Romeo is thought to be the male lead, along with American Idol winner Jordan Sparks. The "black" High School Musical would have significant benefits for Disney, expanding the audience to the black community while deflecting criticism that the HSM franchise was too white. It would also address another concern as Romeo is considered a fairly competent basketball player, a sharp contrast to the weak athletic performance by Zac Efron.
Others say that the remake will be closer to the original, but with a more famous cast. Miley Cyrus would reprise the role of Gabriella Montez, while current American Idol contestant David Archuleta would step into Efron's place. Archuleta and Cyrus met during her appearance in the Idol Gives Back episode and they hit it off. Pictures of the two frolicking with Miley Cyrus showing her bra and underwear have appeared on the internet, though some say it looks like the result of a Photoshop hack.
High School Musical has been a huge boost to Disney and its ABC parent company. Wall Street analysts who cover Disney have been upbeat about further exploitation of the franchise, though a couple raised doubts that it's being pushed too far.
