In a shock announcement yesterday, Iranian state radio said that President Ahmadinejad will be joining camp US pop group the Village People. He will stand between the guy in leathers and the Red Indian in dance routines, and wear an Ali Baba costume.
Pint-sized Ahmadinejad said:
"I have always been interested in music. I come from a village and therefore I believe that the Village People would be a good band to join. Also, there are no women in it, which helps."
The President is planning to go on leave for 12 months, during which time Ayatollah Mustafajob will rule in his place.
The Village People shot to fame in the 1970s with their disco classics YMCA and In the Navy. Since then, they have had little success. The guy in leathers said:
"Hopefully, Ahmy will bring us luck. We'll be bringing out all our classics, such as YMCA, In the Navy and Macho Man, complete with Arabic ululations. But we've got some great new songs planned, like I Wanna Be In the Revolutionary Guard, Tehran's the Place for Me, and Woman Cover your Face."
Village People has a strong following among the gay community and it is not clear how gay fans will react to an admitted homophobe joining the band.
