ABC announced this morning that Isaiah Washington's popular character Dr. Preston Burke would be spun off into his own show, a midseason replacement, to be called "Gay's Anatomy."
The show would take place at a fictional San Francisco hospital that caters to Gay and Lesbian patients.
At the press conference announcing the show Washington said: "It appears that the character of Dr. Preston Burke has always been a homosexual, he never consummated his relationship with Dr. Yang, who he assumed was just an overly emotional bony little Asian boy. When he found otherwise, he left Seattle. Now if one of you would please take a pen and stab me in the jugular I would be most appreciative."
Washington stated that he had over extended himself financially when "Grey's Anatomy" became a hit, and needs the series to pay bills.
"In the pilot I go to the Chief of Surgery at San Francisco Gay and Lesbian Hospital, who is played by Harvey Firestein, and I tell him that, because of the circumstances surrounding my departure from Seattle Grace I had been blackballed, and he says, um, that he loves black balls. Please, Lord, take me now!"
Show creator Shona Rhimes said that the doctor's at San Francisco Gay and Lesbian hospital are gay, as are the actors playing them. "Rip Taylor is the administrator; Sean Hayes is the cardiac surgeon, Dr McQueery; Lance Bass is a young intern Dr. Burke takes under his wing; Carson Kressley is a doctor of fashion, because, there is no medical emergency bigger than a fashion emergency; and Rupert Everett will be his former lover." Washington smiled and said: "I swear to God if I am ever alone with this bitch in an elevator I...I..."
Rhimes was asked if any of "Grey's Anatomy's" stars would be visiting Dr. Burke and she said that in the pilot T.K. Knight's character Dr. O'Malley goes for an interview at the hospital, sees Dr. Burke, slaps him and says "What'cha gonna do: Cry faggot?"
When asked if there was any animosity between him and T.K. Knight Washington said "Of course not. Love the little faggot. You know what's ironic, besides me being on this show and not him, his character got to bang both Ellen Pompeo and Katherine Heigl, and I got to sleep with a woman who's tits you couldn't find with a microscope. By the way, I can say faggot now that I'm on this show, one freaking perk. Faggot, faggot, faggot."
Rhimes then informed him that according to his contract he would be fined one episodes pay every time he used a derogatory comment towards homosexuals Washington said: "Really, please, just frickin shoot me, I'm begging you people here."
The conference ended with Rhimes showing a scene from the pilot, where Dr. Burke, wearing Speedos, dances in front of Everett singing: "I like it in the tush, tush, tush." At the conclusion of the clip Washington fell to the floor after trying to hang himself with his tie from a boom mike.
