With the recent legalisation of gay marriage, Coronation Street bosses have written the most unique fictional wedding in history as Roy Cropper and Haley Patterson tie the knot in a full church wedding.
"Roy and Haley had a civil partnership back in 2010," said Julie Hesmondhalgh who plays the transsexual soap star. "And before that, their union was blessed."
The third time lucky marriage will see Haley dust off her wedding dress again, as the two take full advantage of the new change in the law that allows gay marriage.
"Haley's not gay," said Julie. "She's a woman. However, in the eyes of the law, she was a man, and as such could only engage in a civil partnership with Roy."
Coronation Street wanted to screen a proper gay marriage, but current television rules state that only one major character in the soap can be gay at any one time, and as such they cannot have two permanent gay characters.
"Haley and Roy are the perfect choice for Corrie to keep current with the change in the law," Julie said. "And as a plus point, I get to wear a wedding dress again. I love wearing wedding dresses."
This wedding will allow Haley to tie the record of number of weddings by one soap character currently held by Deirdre Barlow, and she's not had to get divorced once.
"It's brilliant," she said.
