Spangles Hotel in Blackpool has been saved from closure by Channel 5's The Hotel Inspector, when only five people visited in the first year of operation.
"We thought that there was a market for a cross dressing friendly hotel," said proprietor, and cross dresser, Candy Rapper. "We did our market research very thoroughly. We knew that a lot of cross dressers needed somewhere with a vibrant night life, with a friendly, non-judgemental atmosphere. We asked loads of cross dressers if they'd want such a thing, and they all did."
Despite the extensive research, Spangles has had a mere five visitors, and was facing closure.
"We rang Channel 5 and agreed to appear on The Hotel Inspector," said Ms Rapper. "This did mean outing ourselves on national television. But we were desperate."
Alex Polizzi turned up, and was at first mistaken for a prospective guest, but soon ironed out the confusion.
"At first they thought I was a cross dresser," said Alex. "Especially being called Alex. I really must have a word with the wardrobe and make-up departments at Channel 5."
Alex spent a few days with the hotel, and was impressed by the facilities.
"It's right in the heart of the vibrant LGBT scene in Blackpool," said Alex. "I can't fault it's location or it's facilities. It's top notch. Their advertising is spot on as well, reaching their target audience very effectively."
At first Alex Polizzi was stumped as to the cause of the lack of visitors.
"I did eventually work it out," she said. "And now the hotel is full nearly every night."
Candy Rapper is quite ashamed at how simple the solution was.
"Apparently," said Candy. "Although we were advertising as having vacancies we also advertised as having a TV in every room - so people thought we were full!"
