It has been long established that video games which do not allow you to skip non-interactive video segments can be very frustrating to game players. It now seems that the video game industry is ready to take this a step further, by allowing game players to skip gameplay.
Slack Supy, the founder of Grinbo Entertainment, announced today that they are designing their new game with with a more radical approach to the problem of player frustration.
"Today's game players do not want frustration. They want immediate and persistent satisfaction", he said. "Although it seems like a good idea to force a game player to work for their rewards, who really enjoys that? We looked long and hard at this problem and our research revealed that we could increase both our profits and the satisfaction of game players by simply allowing player to opt out of both cinematics and gameplay".
Although game players can still choose to work their way through the game if they wish to, they will also be given the option of skipping entire sections of gameplay. It is rumoured that an option on the main menu will allow the player to win all achievements and obtain the highest possible score, ranking and achievements at a press of a button.
Grinbo believe that their radical new approach will win. "Consider how much content of a game rarely gets played", suggested Slack. "That represents a great deal of waste. With our new approach, players can jump to any part of the game they wish at any time, so that they can get to experience of the game without any frustration or effort. It's all about making things as convenient as possible for the player, so that they can show off their skillz to their online friends".
Of course, publishers have been trying to address some of the same issues for some time. For example the game Joy Ride reportedly will allow a game player to almost win a race without actually moving at all. Slack was sceptical about the future of such approaches. "The problem with that is that it gets boring to have to do nothing in order to win a game, when the activity still takes time. There is also the chance that something unfortunate happens and the player ends up frustrated because they still fail to win even after spending a few minutes on it. With our solution we take the player right to the win the moment they want it."
Some remain sceptical, and even hostile to such ideas. There have even been claims that this could spell the end of the video game industry. Slack does not think so, however. "It's all about customer satisfaction and being able to provide the quickest and easiest path to a feeling of accomplishment. How could that be bad for the industry?", slack added.
Grinbo's new game will be based on the Pinocchio license, focusing on "Pleasure Island" where children are given everything thet want, while being turned into jackasses. However, in a twist, winning the game requires you to become a jackass, rather than prevent it. "You can be sure, there will be a button to achieve that in one go", said Slack. "With one press you not only turn yourself into a jackass, but all of the other children too".
"Pinocchio FTW" is due to be released in mid 2013 on XBLA, and will come with another innovation: downloading of the game will not be required in order to win, as you will be able to win the game right from the purchase screen. How's that for convenient?
