Jerry Seinfeld's upcoming ad for Microsoft may surprise you. After getting beaten down by Apple's successful branding ads showing a "cool" Mac guy versus a nerdy PC guy, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer are finally fighting back.
The advertising scheme comes from Crispin Porter and Bogusky, better known for its Burger King ads. In the ads Seinfeld tells jokes to Bill Gates about Microsoft Vista, and Gates laughs. CPB spokesman Joe Mahma says the idea is to minimize consumer fear about Microsoft and Vista. "Jokes and laughter really help in this kind of situation. We have to humanize Microsoft."
Seinfeld will pocket an estimated $25 million in the first year of the new ad campaign, plus he gets an all-you-can-eat pass at Burger King restaurants worldwide.
Meanwhile, Apple fans are not sitting still. Clips from the Seinfeld TV show have started surfacing on YouTube showing Apple computers in the background. Seinfeld and Microsoft had no comment on that.
