This happened with round tires

Firestone Tire Company has recalled it's line of X44 all weather tires for a problem with it's tread design. The tread design defect has unexpected reactions to being slightly over inflated.

"We're not saying all the sold tires will, but rather could potentially spontaneously change shape as your driving." Said a public relations rep for Firestone. "We've received unconfirmed reports of this happening and we put consumer safety first."

A Consumers Report study has revealed that these tires have a tendency to, without warning, morph from round to square instantaneously. As you can imagine this can cause major problems with a moving car.

One report said that a driver was on a California freeway when BAM the car seemed to just lock up for no apparent reason. There were many near collisions resulting from the vehicle lock up. The driver eventually regained control and pulled over. When the driver got out to investigate he observed square tires on all four wheels.

Scientists agree, tires work much better when they are round, square tires kind of defeat the whole physics working behind rolling something rather than dragging it.
