Complimentary services and products have long been used to intensify consumer interest. The added value of something free with something you pay for has been used to market high end products and as seen on TV junk alike. Although this is nothing new, one company is bringing it to the next level, Honda Hat Co. is offering a free sports car with every hat purchase!
If it sounds too good to be true, that's because it is. The asking price for these 'top of the line hats' is a paltry $69,743. What's more, it was revealed last quarter that the hats themselves are made overseas in sweatshops for about 32 cents each! In a call in interview to AP Honda Hat Co owner Takeo Fukui explains, "The move to overseas manufacturing was made in large part to the added benefit for our customers, more than for financial reasons. Even the industry's best adult seamstresses can't match the clean and tight lines a child can sow. And Japan has some of the world's most skilled sowers. The product we make is a rare quality in an industry dominated by sports teams and foxy grandpas. What we offer to the world is cutting edge fashion. Clearly, at the price our hats aren't for everyone. But if you truly care about how you look, you buy Honda. And the free car is nice too."
Although Honda is well known for its hats, they do also manufacture the cars they come with and they are picking up notoriety. Over Twitter, a random 20 something male tweeted, "Rice Brnrz in da houz bring ya #Honda whips to #TacoBell and chill". Yet another, "I don't kno if it's da small dix or wat but dez Japs can make a car"
To the point, a stranger business model, there is not, but after $995 million for the third reporting quarter of 2011...they might just be on to something.
